dead as a scone - Ron Benrey

It took 3 tries to get into this book.  On the third try, I vowed not to give up on it. Halfway through, I skipped to the end.  I just couldn't stomach the inanity of the dialogue any more.

Although the writing got a little better a ways into the book, it never felt natural. Almost like the author was trying too hard to make the characters sound English and making the only American character sound English was even worse. It also slipped into a lot of cozy cliches that set my teeth on edge: overly curious snoopy woman stages her own investigation, the cops tell her not to meddle, co-workers who couldn't stand each other suddenly fall in love, etc.

Not a horribly bad book, but not a very good one either.
